چکیده

Using dynamic causal modelling (DCM), we have presented provisional evidence to suggest: (i) the mismatch negativity (MMN) is generated by self-organised interactions within a hierarchy of cortical sources [Garrido, M.I., Kilner, J.M., Kiebel, S.J., Stephan, K.E., Friston, K.J., 2007. Dynamic causal modelling of evoked potentials: a reproducibility study. NeuroImage 36, 571-580] and (ii) the MMN rests on plastic change in both extrinsic (between-source) and intrinsic (within source) connections (Garrido et al., under review). In this work we re-visit these two key issues in the context of the roving paradigm. Critically, this paradigm allows us to discount any differential response to differences in the stimuli per se, because the standards and oddballs are physically identical. We were able to confirm both the hierarchical nature of the MMN generation and the conjoint role of changes in extrinsic and intrinsic connections. These findings are consistent with a predictive coding account of repetition-suppression and the MMN, which gracefully accommodates two important mechanistic perspectives; the model-adjustment hypothesis [Winkler, I., Karmos, G., Näätänen, R., 1996. Adaptive modelling of the unattended acoustic environment reflected in the mismatch negativity event-related potential. Brain Res. 742, 239-252; Näätänen, R., Winkler, I., 1999. The concept of auditory stimulus representation in cognitive neuroscience. Psychol Bull 125, 826-859; Sussman, E., Winkler, I., 2001. Dynamic sensory updating in the auditory system. Brain Res. Cogn Brain Res. 12, 431-439] and the adaptation hypothesis [May, P., Tiitinen, H., Ilmoniemi, R.J., Nyman, G., Taylor, J.G., Näätänen, R., 1999. Frequency change detection in human auditory cortex. J. Comput. Neurosci. 6, 99-120; Jääskeläinen, I.P., Ahveninen, J., Bonmassar, G., Dale, A.M., Ilmoniemi, R.J., Levänen, S., Lin, F.H., May, P., Melcher, J., Stufflebeam, S., Tiitinen, H., Belliveau, J.W., 2004. Absorption of DCM Dye in Ethanol: Experimental and Time Dependent Density Functional Study

Experimental and theoretical absorption spectra of [2-[2-[4-(dimethylamino) phenyl]ethenyl]-6-methyl-4H- pyran-4-ylidene]-propanedinitrile (DCM) have been studied. UV-Visible (UV-Vis.) absorption spectrum of DCM has been reported after its synthesis. Two relatively intense peaks appeared at 473 and 362 nm respectively. A theoretical investigation on the electronic structure of DCM is presented ...

Mismatch negativity indexes illness-specific impairments of cortical plasticity in schizophrenia: a comparison with bipolar disorder and Alzheimer's disease.

Cognitive impairment is an important predictor of functional outcome in patients with schizophrenia, yet its neurobiology is still incompletely understood. Neuropathological evidence of impaired synaptic connectivity and NMDA receptor-dependent transmission in superior temporal cortex motivated us to explore the correlation of in vivo mismatch negativity (MMN) with cognitive status in patients ...

A Review on 17-β estradiol a Potent Therapeutic Factor of Diabetic Cardiomyopathy

Type 2 diabetes causes structural and functional changes in the myocardium, which is called cardiomyopathy. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a distinct primary disorder process, independent of coronary artery disease, which leads to heart failure in diabetic patients. Also, DCM is a multifaceted disorder that is one of the leading causes of death in elderly and postmenopausal women. Menopause i...

Running head: Memory trace formation in SLI or Dyslexia Auditory short-term memory trace formation for non-speech and speech in SLI and Dyslexia as indexed by the N100 and Mismatch negativity (MMN) electrophysiological responses

This study investigates non-speech and speech processing in Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and dyslexia. We used a passive Mismatch Negativity (MMN) task to tap automatic brain responses and an active behavioural task to tap attended discrimination of non-speech and speech sounds. Using the roving standard MMN paradigm, we varied the number of standards (‘few’ vs ‘many’) to investigate the ...

Auditory Mismatch Negativity in Response to Changes of Counter-Balanced Interaural Time and Level Differences

Interaural time differences (ITD) and interaural level differences (ILD) both signal horizontal sound source location. To achieve a unified percept of our acoustic environment, these two cues require integration. In the present study, we tested this integration of ITD and ILD with electroencephalography (EEG) by measuring the mismatch negativity (MMN). The MMN can arise in response to spatial c...
